I am attempting to discover the parents of Rachel Jane (Jennie) Nicholson, my 2g grandmother. I have only two clues: 1) a story that both her parents dies in an epidemic and she claimed to have spent time in an orphanage which "burnt to the ground" before being taken in by someone of unclear relationship and 2) A paper signed by her, in which she spells her last name "Nickelson" (though her son with her surname as his middle name spelt it "Nicholson"), and states she was born in Bridgeton, NJ in 1860.
Anything which might help, even if it is only to eliminate possibilites, would be gratefully received.
Jane Errickson appears on the 1860 and 1880 Census in NJ, Salem County. In 1880 she is living in Bridgeton with Margaret J Fries (Fried), listed as her daughter, single (never married), age 40, and Jennie Nicholson, listed as her grandaughter, age 14, single. Jane was born in PA, parents born in NJ. Margaret and Jane were born in NJ.
This same family seems to appear in Alloway in 1860, with John Errickson, farmer, at the head. If anyone is familiar with this Errickson/Nickson, Nicholson/Fries connection, please contact me. Thanks.
