Martyn,

The book; La Charrette: A History of the Village Gateway
to the American Frontier is on-line. Just "Google" it.
Chapter titled Zebulon Pike and the President's Guests, page 144, there is mention of Jean Baptiste LaLand from Illinois who travels to Santa Fe. His parents names
are give as Etienne and Francoise LaLand. From the little that I read of the book it seems like it' a very interesting book.
