Several NORRIS families are listed in the 1790 Ninety-Six District, Greenville County, SC, census. They are living near each other & so are probably related: Thomas, Abner, David, James & another Thomas NORRIS and, several households later, John NORRIS.

Abner NORRIS, of White Co., TN, applied for a Revolutionary War pension in 1833. He was born in Lunenburg Co, VA, 12 Jan 1758. He entered the service as a resident of Halifax Co., VA. During the war, his father sold his land in Halifax & moved to Guilford Co., NC. After the war, Abner removed from Guilford to Greenville District, SC. From there, he removed to White Co., TN, where he had resided about 30 years.

John NORRIS, of McMinn Co., TN, applied for a Revolutionary War pension in 1835. He was born 20 Oct 1750 in Lunenburg Co., VA. From there he moved to Charlotte, then to Halifax counties, VA; he moved to Wilkes Co., NC, where he resided during the war; he then moved to Granville [prob Greeenville] District, SC; he had resided in McMahan [sic] Co., TN, for 10 years. Aquila LEATHERWOOD, a clergyman, & David CANTRELL Esq. certified as to the truth of his claim. There were CANTRELLs in the 1790 Greenville census residing near the NORRISes, & David CANTRELL was probably of that family.

There is no evidence from either pension application that this NORRIS family EVER resided in Colleton Co., SC. I believe that this information came from the Norris book by Harry Alexander Davis. Information from that book should be verified before it is accepted as fact because the book contains many errors.
