To answer Michelle Thomas's question, yes, of course it's possible that your Orear was a black man. I'm one of the early participants in the McCarthy/McCarty family DNA study. The administrator of our study is an African-American whose grandmother in some previous generation was a slave, or freed black who fathered children with a white McCarty. The male or Y chromosome is handed down from father to son, usually a perfect copy with no mutations (changes) for many generations, which is why our black administrator has DNA identical to many others in the study who are "quite white". Of course, his matrilineal DNA, which he inherited on the X chromosome from his mother's mother's mother's mother back to the generation which fathered the child with the white McCarty would of course show the African connection by it's own distinctive which would show his black connections to Africa by it's distinctive mitochondrial DNA. A good reason for those interested to find a family DNA study and participate.
