My ggg-grandmother was Eliza PEABODY who married, first, Mills DeForest ANDROSS, then Noah NEWELL. It's been several years since I looked at this branch of family history. I have never been able to find any official record of Mills ANDROSS' birth, nor of his marriage to Eliza, although various unofficial sources state 1822 for marriage. I do know that his oldest son, Charles Peabody ANDROSS, was born 12 August 1823 (my gg-gf). A second son, William Henry, was born 23 May 1825. Apparently Mills abandoned the family when the boys were small, and went to Texas. It has always intrigued me that Rev Silas MCKEEN wrote the history of Bradford VT and knew Mills went to Texas, etc. He must have known of the Alamo, and that Mills was alive until 1836. However, he was also the minister who performed the marriage of Eliza and Noah Newell in 1828!...this bit of info was sent to me many years ago (but I never have seen the records myself: "According to court records of Bradford, VT, Noah Newhall and Eliza Andross, 'widow', were married on December 4, 1828 in Bradford. The marriage was performed by Silas McKeen." Did Silas McKeen think Mills was dead/or not?
Noah and Eliza had 3 daughters. One of them, Julia, is mentioned in Mark Twain's book about the voyage of the Quaker City. She eventually married Dr. Abraham Reeves JACKSON (the ship's doctor), president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Chicago. Dr. Jackson and Julia are also buried in Janesville, WI.
Regarding Eliza's birth/death dates: the only info I have is from her gravestone in Janesville, WI: birth 24 September 1801, death 30 October 1882. She shared the same gravestone as Noah Newell, listed as his wife. Noah had died two years before her, and then she went to Chicago to live with her daughter, according to her obituary in Janesville Gazette, Nov 1, 1882.. I just now looked at the online Illinois Death Index, and found her: [NEWELL, Elizabeth P. died 1882, Oct 30. in Chicago. age 81. Certificate # 00010923 Cook County.]
My information is fairly sketchy on Eliza, but if anything here gives you a new clue, you may ferret out more info.
