Proof. I have no documents or any other informaton that link my James Peachey b. 1833 to the James Peachey son of James and Maria. The birth date matches, true. I guess if I knew that this James son of James and Maria is not found later, married in Suffolk or elsewheres and there was some note that he left to go to America...I will have to search the marriage records further. The only note I have from James is that he may have come from County Sussex, not Suffolk.
As for the DNA test. One of the two Peachey's is my father. It would tell me a great deal if a direct decendant of James and Maria would also volunteer to be tested and we could see if he matches up...or not. When he volunteered to be tested, I signed him up for the Peach group and the British Isles because I thought those would be the groups where he would most likely find matches. He had all 67 markers tested but one can go with as few as 12, 25, or 37. If two people with the same surname match 12 for 12 there is about a 90% chance that they are related within 20 generations. If they match 25/25 it goes down to about 13 generations. 37/37 is down to within 7 generation. 67/67 goes to about 6. I did this testing with my maternal grandfather several years ago and it has been quite enlightening. Within his surname, there has been several direct matches and a couple of 1 and 2 degree separations. This has helped members of this surname group resolve several branches of the family tree. I realize that testing is not inexpensive and we may have to wait some time.
