I am researching the Pecks of Washington and Smyth Co, VA and I offer up the following information that I have gathered in the past few months. I recently conduced a tax list and census review and came to the following conclusion. Jacob Peck is probably the father of all Pecks who came out of Washington and Smyth. I did find a George Peck in 1794, 1796, 1797, 1798, and 1803. Do not know how he is connected. He either died, moved on, or that part of Washington Co, VA became part of another county. The next Peck shows in 1809 and that is Jacob. Jacob continues to show in most of the tax lists thru 1832. He also showed in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 Washington Co, VA census records. Starting in 1832 he shows in Smyth and continues in the tax lists thru 1843. He also shows in the 1840 Smyth Co, VA census. Based on a composite of records believe Jacob was born between 1770 and 1775 and died around 1843. He was married around 1795. Two men, Isaac (my line) and John seem to be his sons. Isaac and John show for a few years in Washington and Smyth, then show in Morgan Co, KY. Isaac is there by 1840 and John is there by 1846. It appears that Jacob Peck, Jr. is the only son of Jacob Peck, Sr. who stayed in Smyth Co, VA. Junior firsts shows in 1824 and continues in the tax lists thru at least 1850 where he also shows with his family in the 1850 census. This Jacob Peck Jr. is presumably the father of John Duncan Peck who was in Casey Co, KY by 1858. (Note: John Duncan Peck supposedly sold land in Smyth Co, VA around 1890. These records show he was of Casey Co, KY...though I have not personally seen them. Isaac Peck had a son, Andrew Campbell Peck of Lincoln Co, KY. Various records, from marriage to death show his birthplace as Smyth Co, VA) Three possible other children are: Abraham (shows in 1831 tax list only), Lewis (shows in 1834 and 1836), and Joseph (shows in 1836 and 1837). This Abraham is probably the same one who moves to Knox Co, IN and shows in their 1840 census. This Abraham married a Rachel Dunn and raised their family in Indiana. In the 1830 and 1840 census records, Jacob seems to have remarried. In the 1810 and 1820 census records his wife is in the same age bracket as Jacob. In the 1830 and 1840 census, she is 10 to 20 years younger. And the number of children increase, almost as if there are stepchildren as well. Per the 1840 census, they have two boys born between 1830 and 1835, good indicators of stepchildren, grandchildren, or a second marriage to a younger woman. In 1856, A Henry N. Peck marries Ann Eliza Thompson in Tazewell Co, VA. This Henry shows his parents as Julia Ann and Jacob Peck and that he was born in Smyth Co, VA. Thus, he would be the son of either Jacob Peck Sr or Jr. Recently, I've seen query postings that show several Peck boys as sons to a Julia Ann Litz married to Joshua Romans. I've also seen queries that show Jacob Peck marries Julia Litz. But none show any sources. I do know that this is the only Jacob Peck family in Washington and Smyth Co, VA. All these Peck boys and all the children of Joshua and Julia Litz Roman(s) seem to born in Chilhowie, Washington (later Smyth) Co, VA. Based on which web site you look at, the possible Peck children are: Martin Peck (1829), Benjamin F. Peck (1830), and James J. Peck (1832). But they always seem to show with Joshua Romans. Obviously, he is not their father. It also appears that Joshua may have died in the 1820s. He simply disappears. I first found him in the 1794 Washington Co, VA tax list (and he may have been there earlier). So he was much older than Julia. She fits the age bracket for the wife of Jacob Peck in both the 1830 and 1840 census records for Jacob Peck. Interestingly, in the 1850 census, Henry and Jos/Jas (so Joseph or James) is living with the Peter Litz family in Tazewell Co, VA. A J. J. Peck is living with with George Goss/Gose, also of Tazewell. This may be the same person as the Jos/Jas living with Peter Litz. Anyway, these two or three Peck boys are living with people who are related to Julia Litz. Can that be just a coincidence? Recall from earlier that Henry Peck who married Ann Thompson, did so in Tazewell. Probably the same person as the Henry living with Peter Litz. So, basically looking for someone who can help me out with this Peck family. In summary, here is what I suspect; pleasse correct/help out if you see any problems. - Jacob Peck is the father of all Pecks in Washington and Smyth Co, VA from 1809 thru the mid 1850s. - He probably remarried before the 1830 census, probably to Julia Litz Romans. She either divorced Joshua or he died in the 1820s. - They lived in Smyth Co until he died about 1843. I have seen postings that show Julia Litz died in Wythe Co, VA in 1845. I suppose that is possible. If so, what is the source and what was her last name when she died? Was she living alone or with one of her relatives? - For those who post Peck children for Julia Litz Romans...where did you find that information? - I suspect that after Jacob and Julia died, the underage boys were farmed out to her "richer" relatives. Would welcome any comments/questions. Larry Notify Administrator about this message?
