Looking for more info on Henry N. Peck who died in Tazewell Co, VA. Here is what I know so far. Henry Peck age 20 yr, 11 mo, 10 days, born in Smyth Co, VA son of Jacob and Julia Peck married on 3 Apr 1856, Anna Eliza Thompson, age 23 yr, 4 mo, 15 days, born in Washington Co, VA; dau of James Patton and Catherine Thompson. There is a cemetery, called Mt. Olivet in Gratton, Tazewell Co, VA that has the following headstones:

Annie Peck 11/5/1832-8/10/1920
Henry Peck 4/23/1835- (no death info)

I found an obituary (Clinch Valley News), dated 20 Aug 1920 giving her name as Anne Thompson Peck, born in Burke's Garden in April 1833. She lived in Gratton. Though her death date was not given directly, one can determine that she died 15 Aug 1920. Though the dates do not match the headstone exactly, one can easily see that this is the same person. The obituary also mentions her husband's name, Henry Peck, and that he is still living.

I also found an obituary reference for a Henry Peck of Tazewell Co, VA. I do not have any info other than the date of the local publication was 6 Nov 1825. So, one can assume, if this is indeed the same Henry, that he died 6 Nov or a few days earlier. Either he was buried in a different location or his family did not enter his death date on the headstone.

I've done a lot of research recently on the Pecks in Smyth and its parent county, Washington. There is only one Peck family in this area that I can find and that is the family of Jacob Peck. This must be the father of Henry N. Peck.

Now, this Jacob Peck would be about 60 years old when Henry was born. Not impossible, but does imply a much younger wife. So, I suspect that Jacob had a second wife. When you research the census records for Jacob, two things become obvious. Starting in the 1830 census, his wife is much younger than the one in previous census records. Also, in the 1830 and 1840 census records, they have quite a few children living with them. To me, this suggests a younger wife with not only children from a previous marriage, but children from their marriage.

This Jacob lived in Washington, then Smyth Co, VA for his entire adult life (I first find him in the 1809 Washington Co, VA tax list). Jacob dies sometime in the mid 1840s. I suspect his wife dies in the mid 1840s as well, though I have no proof. I do know they both disappear from the records.

In the 1850 Tazewell Co, VA census, there is a Henry Peck, age 15 and a Jos (or Jas...so Joseph or James), age 18, living with the Peter Litts (Litz) family. I believe this to be the same Henry, with his brother. It appears to me that this could well indicate they were orphans and living with Peter Litz either because they are related, or because they were "bound out" to learn a trade.

In some LDS records, I have found references that Julia Litz, wife of Joshua Roman(s) had some children with Peck as the last name. What does this mean? I haven't been able to find out. Does this mean she had children "out of wedlock" or does this mean she remarried, but the researcher did not know the father's name? I have also discovered that Peter Litz is related to Julia, though off the top of my head, I can't remember...probably cousins. So, did Julia Litz remarry to Jacob Peck after Joshua Romans died? Her age does match the age of the woman living with Jacob Peck in both the 1830 and 1840 census records. Those who have family trees on Julia Litz show that she died 22 Nov 1845 in Wythe Co, VA. I wold love to see the documents supporting that fact. What was her last name when she died. I must also say that other than her marriage record to Joshua Romans, I have never seen any official records for Julia Litz, Julia Romans, or Jula Peck.

Finally, in both the 1810 and 1820 census records for Henry Peck, he shows that his father was born in Germany.

So, any help concerning Henry Peck and his ancestry would be greatly appreciated. Are there any of his descendents out there doing research on the family?

Would really like to resolve the following:

1. Did Julia Litz Romans remarry to Jacob Peck?
2. If so, then are they the parents to Henry Peck?
3. Was Henry Pecks heritage actually German or was this a census error?
4. Does anyone have access to obituaries of Tazewell Co, VA. I would love to get a copy of his obituary.

Again, any help would be appreciated.

Larry
