This is another follow-up on my initial query concerning Henry N. Peck of Tazewell Co, VA. I recently received the death certificate of Henry N. Peck. It stated that he was born on April 23, 1835, that he was 90 years, 6 months, and 10 days old, died on 3 Nov 1925, and that he was a widower, formerly married to Ann Thompson. This Henry died in the Jeffersonville district of Gratton, Tazewell Co, VA. He was buried in Gratton,VA on 4 Nov 1925. The death certificate also contained some info that was either confusing, or in error. For instance, it states that he was born in Tazewell Co, VA. Several other documents state that he was born in Smyth. He had lived in Tazewell for over 75 years, so that error would be understandable. Now here is the really important information, especially for those trying to link this Peck and others to the Litz family. The death certificate states that his father was Jacob Peck, born Smyth Co, VA and that his mother was Mary Litz, born in Tazewell and Smyth Co, VA. The Tazewell reference was typed; the Smyth Co, VA was handwritten. In either case, both were obviously wrong (though a minor point). Smyth Co was not formed until 1832; however, could imply that the informant believed both parents were born in the area currently called Smyth Co, VA. (which would be either Wythe or Washington before 1832). The informant, interestingly, was not one of the Peck children or close relatives. Instead, the informant was A. Z. Litz! I did some quick research and found out that an A. Z. Litz (Alma Z. Litz) born around 1869, was the son of John T. Litz and the grandson of Peter Gose Litz. Recall from my earlier query that Henry Peck was living with Peter Litz in the 1850 census. Now, A. Z. Litz said that Henry's mother was Mary Litz, not Julia Ann Litz, as I believe. However, believe this to be an error since Julia Ann Litz Romans Peck died way back in 1846. So, I believe that the info in these three query entries give solid information (both factual and circumstantual) that Jacob Peck, born around 1770-1775, possibly in Germany, married twice. The second wife was Julia Ann Litz Romans Peck and that they were the parents of at least one child, Henry N. Peck. Any questions or concerns, please let me know.
