The below information has not been fully look at or confirmed by me. Just notes that might come in real handy for some one... patty http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-genforum/forums/scotland.cgi (research possibility) Neidpath Castle near the town of Peebles. Many of the people in those early days took their surname from the owner of the estate they lived or worked on. In your case the Peebles' were not a 'clan' as such, in the Gaelic sense. I have and had relations on my mother's side called Peebles, from the Glasgow area (I now live in Australia.) Peebles does have a nice history dating back to 1328 according to Black. The Collins book lists Peebles in Tweeddale, also Angus 14th c. Peebles is a town due South of Edinburgh on the A703. There are many scottish families that never got rich enough or owned enough land to be able to be Lords or get a title. So these families became Septs of a family that did. The Peebles clan is a sept under the Hay clan. You can look up Peebles info at my site: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Woods/2486 and you can look up info on the Hay clan at: http://dch-design.com/CLAN_HAY/index.html Any serious researcher of the Peebles name needs to have a copy of Anne Bradbury Peebles's book 'Peebles Ante 1600 - 1962'. This book can be ordered direct for $28.50 postpaid from: Rev. Dr. E.H. Peeples 8 Moon Shell Road Hilton Head Island, S.C. 29928-5444 Notify Administrator about this message?
