Barbara I was having trouble following my family line (Prendergast) - I discovered that some siblings of my grandmother were registered as Pender and others as Prendergast - the explanation given was that because the mother couldn't read and write when registering the births that the registrar often used the common spelling of the name. Apparently in Ireland the name Prendergast is often known as Pender - I certainly found that in the 1911 census some family members were 'Pender' and some 'Prendergast'. You really need to check out both names - and possibly also 'Pendergast'.
