Someone recently asked me how exactly my Penn family was related to the Penn family who founded Chiqua-penn Plantation in Reidsville, N.C., a museumlike house and estate from the early 1900s, full of priceless and exotic collections from around the world. The home, which was once featured on the TV show "American Castles," closed to the public a few years ago after being run by the N.C. state university system for many years. However, a private owner has recently purchased it and plans to open it to the public on a limited basis while renovations are under way. I haven't been since it reopened, but assuming similar areas of the house are open, it's well worth the visit, whether you are related to these Penns or not. Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Penn, b. 1875, Rockingham Co., N.C., a wealthy tobacco merchant, built the home for he and his wife Beatrice "Betsy". After I was asked about how I was related, I realized I knew that we probably were, but couldn't remember seeing it detailed. So I did a little research and decided it might be worth posting something on this wing of the Penn family here. Like my line, Jeff is descended from Col. Abram Penn of Patrick Co., Va., who married Ruth Stovall, through their son Thomas Jefferson Penn (the first of many people in the family to hold that name). This original Thomas J. Penn first married Martha Leath. It's through their union that my Penn ancestor, Andrew Jackson Penn, came to be. However, Thomas later remarried to Mary Christian Kennerly, the daughter of Joseph Kennerly and Sarah Christian. Among Thomas' and Mary's children was Frank Reid Penn, who is the father of the Chinquapenn Jeff Penn. Interestingly, Andrew Jackson Penn's wife was Martha Kennerly, Mary's sister. From them my line is through Louis George Penn and his son George Gibson Penn Sr. (my great grandfather), who migrated first to Ohio and then to the Jacksonville, Fla., area, where many of his descendants still live. So, (and this is really the main point of this post) any looking at the relationship between descendants of Andrew Jackson Penn and the descendants of his father Thomas' second wife, Mary Christian Kennerly Penn, should recognize that they are double-related. In my line, Lewis George Penn is both the half-first-cousin (Penn side) and full 2nd cousin (Kennerly side) of Thomas "Jeff" Penn of Chinqua-penn. Notify Administrator about this message?
