Johanna Halbersma wa born December 29, 1921, to John and Tillie (Jelgerhuis) Peters in Chandler, Minnesota. she was baptized and confessed her faith in the Chandler Christian Reformed Church. Johanna attended Chandler Public School and then as a young woman went to work for her father at his creamery in Chandler. On March 18, 1948, Johanna married Howard Halbersma in Chandler, where they made their home most of their lives. Over the years Johanna was a cook for the Chandler Public School and at a local Bible camp. She owned and operated a newspaper called the Chandler Reminder until she sold the business to Edgerton paper, and also had a book store in Chandler for a short time. Johanna was a member of the Chandler Christian Reformed Church where she was active in the past in the Dorcas Society and the churches women’s groups. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, word puzzles and generally keeping busy with endless projects. Several years ago Johanna moved into the Maplewood Court assisted living apartments in Fulda, Minnesota before becoming a resident of the Maple Lawn Nursing home, also in Fulda, on July 12, 2007. On Friday, October 5, 2007, Johanna died at the Sanford-Sioux Valley Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 85.
Johanna is survived by her two sons: Harlan, Litchfield, MN and Marion (Teresa), Ozark, MO; one son-in-law, Rodney Van Peursem, Boise, ID; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters: Geneva Peters and Gertrude Prins, both of Chandler, MN; one brother John (Carolyn) Peters, Charles City, IA; one brother-in-law Carl Reitsma, Chandler, MN; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Her husband Howard; parents; one daughter Marlys Van Peursem, one infant brother, one sister Harriet Reitsma and one brother-in-law Peter Prins, preceded her in death.
