Micajah, Nehemiah, Francis & William Posey of SC & GA

Someone recently suggested that Major Micajah Posey (b.1742, d. 30 Mar 1828 in Chester Co., PA) was the person in the following land record :
from Hollingsworth Register, VOL. 3, NO. 1, MARCH, 1967 (see http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jayken/hollingsworth/hr/670301.htm)
(65) p. 274. Indenture, MICAJAH POSEY to BENJAMIN HOLLINGSWORTH, both of Union District. Sum: $63.00 Land on Broad River granted to FRANCIS POSEY Oct. 20, 1784. Witnesses: Thos. Sheriff, AQUILLA HOLLINGSWORTH, Jonathan "x" Cullins. Dated Oct. 26, 1802; Recorded and sworn June 26, 1819.

This record alone cannot establish that Major Micajah ever went to SC. The SC Micajah is instead identifiable as belonging to a different multi-generational line of Micajah's in SC, GA, FL and IL that all appear to be related, while there is no evidence Major Micajah ever named a son named Micajah. In addition, all the Benjamin Hollingsworth 'Cain Creek' land records appear to relate to the same original 529 acre 1784 land grant to Frances 'Farr' Posey (who d.1787 with a will naming his children, one of whom m. Benjamin Hollingsworth).

It has also been suggested that either or both Francis and Nehemiah Posey, both landholders in Union District SC in 1787 , were brothers of Major Micajah. This is contradicted by two additional land records - one for Nehemiah and one for Absolom Posey (son of Francis mentioned in Francis' 1787 will). The first record suggests that Nehemiah and Francis were brothers with Nehemiah buying most of Francis' land shortly before Francis died in 1787. The second states that Nehemiah's father (and thus Francis' father) was named Benjamin :
1787 Francis Union Co., DB B:347 Francis Posey to Nehemiah Posey, 429 acres in Union Co. on the south side of Broad River on Cain Creek, part of tract of 529 acres. [SC 116 p2]
1789 Absalom 1789 Union Co., DB D:336, Absalom Posey [son of Francis d. 1787] & Jane his wife of Edgefield Co., SC to Benjamin Hollingsworth of Union Co. for 100 pounds sterling, tract on a branch of Cain Creek, adj Dave Hopkins line, said Hollinsgworth line to a new made line by Nehemiah Posey and Benjamin Posey his father. Absalom Posey (seal) [SC116 p3]

If one compares these records with the first Micajah Posey 1802 sale of land to Benjamin Hollingsworth - and recognizes that Micajah is not named in Francis' will - then Micajah could only have acquired his 100 acres 'granted to FRANCIS POSEY Oct. 20, 1784' from Nehemiah. On this basis - and lacking any interim land record - Nehemiah can tentatively be identified as this Micajah's father.

I believe the above Nehemiah, stated son of Benjamin, was b. abt 1748 prob in VA, m. Anna Trantham 7 Jun 1777 in Chatham Co., NC, and d. bef 25 Sep 1819 in Pulaski Co., GA. His sons included the above noted Micajah who d. bef 1 Aug 1820 also in Pulaski Co., GA, and who in turn had sons Micajah and Noah who moved to Wakulla Co., FL (that Micajah in turn having a son named Micajah b. 1847 according to the 1860 census). I also believe the Micajah who d. bef 1 Aug 1820 in Pulaski had a son named William who m. Elizabeth Hendley and named his first child Micajah 'Cage' Posey (b. abt 1814, d. aft 1 Jun 1880 in Crawford Co., WI).

Most genealogies mistakenly identify the parents of the William Posey who m. Elizabeth Hendley, associating him with with the William Posey who in 1827 appointed Abraham Haynes of Rutherford Co., Tennessee as his attorney to recover his share of his father Benjamin Posey's estate in Pulaski Co. But that is clearly mistaken given the marriage record of William H. Posey to Barbara Roxanna Haynes 16 Dec 1819 in Rutherford Co., TN. The Abraham Haynes who assisted in obtaining a Posey inheritance was Barbara Roxana Hayne's uncle, and the William Posey of the inheritance lived near Rutherford Co., TN most of his life. Thus the William Posey who m. Elizabeth Hendley (and d. abt 1845 in Fairfield, Wayne Co., IL) was NOT the Posey who employed Abraham Haynes to secure his share of his father's estate having earlier m. Barbara Roxana Haynes.

For those who are interested, I believe that the Benjamin Posey who left an estate in Pulaski Co., GA was also a son of the Nehemiah Posey who m. Anna Trantham and d. before 25 Sep 1819. This would seem to clarify some of the confusion about which William m. Elizabeth Hendley - Nehemiah's son Benjamin was father of the William who m. Barbara Haynes, Nehemiah's son Micajah was father of the William who m. Elizabeth Hendley (and named their 1st son Micajah).

Any additional records or evidence which might clarify this line would be welcome. It is a very complicated line, with multiple different persons using the same names. It is further complicated because all GA census records before 1820 were destroyed.
