It is always a treat when someone can correct me with better evidence - thank you for sharing the file #512 estate records. As you note, they differ materially from the Holcomb abstract I cited. As your file seems more complete it would seem the more reliable - is it a photocopy of the original, or someone else's transcription that might also contain inconsistencies?

Your note suggests that file #512 states that a payment was made to "John Posey Sr.". This would be a spectacular proof if it does indeed actually say 'Sr.', since this would seem to clear up the relationship to the Moore family (which the Holcomb transcription doesn't resolve) while still including Ann Posey's name as a trusted family witness (i.e. possibly the deceased's mother) in the record. Most importantly, it proves that the name of John Posey d.1803's father was also John. Without the Sr. we are left to wonder if John might simply be a relative. Are there any other Posey names in the list of payments or receipts?

Even without a 'Sr.' in the estate record, the file #512 contents suggests we may both be thinking along the same lines since the name 'Ann Posey' still appears as a witness. The records I posted earlier clearly indicate that a John Posey m. Ann Ford (dau of Thomas Ford b. 1704 of Prince William Co VA) and came to Spartanburg Co., SC where he held property near the Fords as well as next to Thomas Posey by 1787, and purchased additional property from Ann (Ford) Posey's brother and sons about 10 years later. I now have them both born cir 1730, which would make Ann's parents abt age 26 when she was born - a very reasonable chronology.

This chronology also permits John and Ann - each then abt age 20 - to be m. about 1750 (prob in VA and quite likely in Prince William Co.) and to have a son John Jr. b. shortly thereafter (also in VA). John Jr. could then m. Nancy Moore bef 1770 - again prob in Virginia - and have sons Richard (b. ca 1770 in VA per Montgomery Co AL 1850 census) and William Sr. (b. ca 1773 in VA per 1850 Lowndes Co AL census). This would be a somewhat tight but certainly not unreasonable chronology. The identification of John d. 1803 as son of John and Ann Ford would also then allow me to assign the Jane Posey who m. Broderick Mason (and had sons Ford Mason and Posey Mason) to John Sr. (where it clearly makes more sense) rather than to John's prob bro Humphrey of Henry & Patrick Co., VA. Since the 1803 will was restricted to 'my two children' Richard and William', Jane could not be assigned as a dau of the John in the will as she was still alive (i.e. executrex of her husband Broderick Mason's will in 1835 - I show her b. cir 1765 and m. Broderick ca 1785).

There is also reasonable evidence that the John Posey who m. Ann Ford was still in VA as late as 1776 (i.e. after William and Richard were b.) per the following land grant award - which no doubt was used to obtain John's Spartanburg Co., SC property about 10 years later :
from 'CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTCH-IRISH SETTLEMENT OF VIRGINIA'; Vol 2, pp 170, by Lyman Chalkley
Lands grants " by right of military service under proclamation of 1763, viz: 1,700 acres for William Cromwell, 10th May, 1776; 940 acres for Francis Kirtley; 1,500 acres for Henry Gains; 1,000 acres for Peter Hog; 1,000 acres for Charles Scott; 1,000 acres for James Walker, JOHN POSEY, Goodrich Crump, Jesse Scott, Marshall Pratt, John Poe, Robert Scott, Hugh Stephenson, Thomas Rutherford. (These records are certified from Rockingham.)

This is not my line, but it has proved fruitful to track all Poseys in the Spartanburg/Orangeburg/Old Ninety-Six area at this time. As you know, it is an incredibly complex task given the large number of Poseys with similar names as well as the lack of complete records.

Here is a question for you - David Trail left a will dated 1829 in which he names William Posey Sr. as executor as well as a trustee (for Trail's dau Elizabeth and her 3 children). The will proves that 3 of David Trail's dau m. Poseys (Frances, Mary and Susannah), but the transcript I've seen doesn't identify the Posey men. William Sr. clearly m. dau Frances, and I tentatively show Mary 'Polly' Trail m. Thomas Posey (prob as his 2nd wife). Although I've seen no evidence of her first name - especially since Richard's wife d. bef the 1850 Montgomery Co., AL census - it would seem very possible that William's bro Richard also m. a David Trail dau - i.e. Susannah. Do you have any evidence of this - or of different Posey husbands for any of these David Trail dau?

As always, new evidence and well reasoned corrections always welcome.

Jonathan
