Jon, It is difficult to document exactly how Benjamin and Humphrey of Barnwell district fit in, other than they seem closely related to Nehemiah of Burckalow Creek. Gary Posey recently posted a note about them (see link below). As for how Francis d.1787 relates to Nehemiah d. 1843, the first step is to recognize that there are 2 sets of Nehemiah Sr. & Jr. in the Edgefield/Orangeburg area at roughly the same time. As far as current information now indicates, both Nehemiah Sr. lines start with Benjamin and Ann Posey of Prince William Co., VA, where Benjamin sold land in 1745 and signed a petition to the House of Delegates 2 Nov 1776 seeking tax relief. He was son of Humphrey (d. bef 24 May 1818) and Sarah Posey (Humphrey's wife is often incorrectly identified as Sarah Lemaster). Benjamin had several sons including the Benjamin (Jr.), Francis, John and Nehemiah who appear in Orange Co. and Chatham Co., NC in the 1750-1780 period (it was this Benjamin's son Nehemiah who m. Anna Trantham in 1767 in Chatham Co., NC). It is interesting to speculate where the name Nehemiah originated - one suspects there was a Nehemiah that was a close relative of Benjamin Sr.s wife, Ann or even Humphrey's wife Sarah. In any event, Benjamin Sr. named a son Nehemiah, one of Nehemiah's brothers named a son Nehemiah, and the rest of the Nehemiahs were sons of those 2 Nehemiahs. Each of Benjamin Sr,'s above 4 sons moved south in the 1780's to SC, prob because they all received large land grants as incentive. Benjamin (Jr.) - who was prob the oldest of the 4 sons - had sons who settled in the Barnwell/Burkelow Creek area, John m. Ann Ford of Prince William Co. VA and by 1790 was in Spartanburg Co., SC, Francis went to Edgefield Co. and d. 1787, and Nehemiah (Sr.) who m. Anna Trantham settled near Francis in Edgefield Co. and bought some of Francis' land just bef Francis d. A previously posted Edgefield land deed states that Nehemiah Sr.'s father was named Benjamin, which also makes Benjamin the father of Nehemiah's brothers. Joy McDaniel and myself have previously posted information indicating this Nehemiah Sr. d. in Pulaski Co., GA, and had a son Nehemiah Jr. who m. Rebecca Dees. Nehemiah Sr. of Burckalow Creek is a different line. He was most likely the oldest son of Benjamin (Jr.), and thus a generation later (but of near similar age) as the Nehemiah Sr. who m. Anna Trantham. Gary Posey last month posted information (he was unfortunately unsuccessful in securing full documentation) concerning the wife and children of Nehemiah Sr. of Burckalow Creek (see genforum.com/posey/messages/2926.html). One of Nehemiah of Burckalow Creek's sons was the Nehemiah Jr. who d. 1743 and m. Mary Friday. While I question some of the suggested children shown in the posting, they all could be right, and land deeds clearly place the Friday family near this Nehemiah (Sr.). Thus the evidence at this point indicates that the Nehemiah Jr. who m. Mary Friday was the son of Nehemiah Sr. of Burckalow Creek, not of the Nehemiah Sr. who m. Anna Trantham and later moved to Pulaski Co., GA. Jonathan Notify Administrator about this message?
