DELBERT LOWE, a farmer living a few miles northwest of Humeston, was struck by lightning and instantly killed Sunday morning, a few minutes before ten o'clock. MR. LOWE was unmarried and made his home with his brother, FRANK and wife. They operated two farms and he was on his way in a motor truck to attend to some chores at the one separated from their home, the distance being about two miles by the road. While driving along the road between the Wm. Packard and Jas. Richman homes on the low ground between two hills, he was struck by lightning above the left ear, the flash tearing his hat and burning his hair about two inches above the ear and down to the back of his neck. From between his shoulders the current passed into the back of the seat, melting some of the wire in the springs. Ed Petty came along the road in a very short time afterward and discovered him as he was collapsed under the steering wheel; his clothing and the cushion were still on fire. The car had run into the gutter and weeds at the side of the road without overturning. Mr. Petty promptly secured assistance and the body was removed and a physician summoned, but death had apparently occurred instantly.
Funeral services were held at two o'clock yesterday afternoon, with a sermon by Rev. Provan, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Derby and Leroy, with ritualistic services by the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Humeston. Burial was made at Last Chance.
