Brand new findings in the loose records of Nash Co. have confirmed that there were two men in Nash in the last quarter of the 1700s with similar names. The older man was Burwell[4] Rose, named in the 1765 Southampton Co., VA, will of his father Richard3 Rose (William2, William1). The father's will spelled this son's name as Burrell. The younger man in Nash was Burrel[5] Rose. Because of the name similarity and the fact that both associated with the same core families in Nash, they were surely a father and son. Both were listed in the 1790 census with the Burwell spelling. Only the younger man was listed in 1800 (with the Burrel spelling), that census showing him as being over 45, hence born by 1755. Original signatures for the older man (from 1770) were found in the records of Southampton Co., VA. These examples matched each other and showed he spelled his own name Burwell. Meanwhile, signatures for the younger man from Nash Co., NC, records (from 1782 and 1805) matched each other but NOT the earliest signatures -- and used the Burrel spelling. Since both men were of majority before Nash Co. was formed, either was capable of generating any particular Nash record. However, a careful study of the records of Nash have allowed the items there under various spelling to be -- in the main -- divided between the men with some real confidence. Descendant lines of one (or both) of these men will clearly include those of Reddick Rose of Nash (married Nancy Manning), Robert Rose of Nash (married Martha "Patsy" Jones), and Theophilus Rose of Wayne (married Christina). These lines carried Y-DNA matching each other and the profile of the early William1 Rose of Surry Co. VA. Amos Rose of Nash (apparently married Lydia Etheridge) is also likely of this family, but no descendant has been found for DNA testing. Hardy Rose of Nash (married Polly Freeman) will almost certainly prove to be of the family as well, but DNA results have not yet been completed, and until they are, no firm and final conclusion can be drawn. --Carl Notify Administrator about this message?
