Morning Susan IF you have not already done so, I suggest that you get a copy of the Marriage Record from the GRO in Southport Lancashire. Its address and a link is on Find My Past- http://www.findmypast.co.uk The Marriage Record Reference is- (Quarter) April, May, June 1882 Liverpool 8b 860 It may have John's age on it, helping pin him down more closely to within a year or two. John does not show up in the English section of the 1881 Census on this site, so you should try the Scottish section on Scotland's People, where you may find his Birth/Christening in the OPR series- http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ================================= With the marriage location and children births in Liverpool and in Brazil, it raises the possibility that John may have been a ship's captain, although not precluding the army. ================================= On both sites, try earlier and later Censuses, as these may help to narrow down when he died - his Death Record may have more clues. ====================================== The LDS Family Search site has those John Balsillie births- http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp International Genealogical Index - British Isles 1. John Cook Balsillie - International Genealogical Index / BI Gender: Male Birth: About 1807 St. Andrew, Fife, Scotland Matches: International Genealogical Index/British Isles - 23 The single Edinburgh Birth seems to make him too young for the Liverpool Marriage; but several of the others are possibilities. ====================================== Note that generally, Scotland has a separate BMD or Statutory Registration system from England & Wales. Statutory Registration started in E&W in 1837; but not until 1855 in Scotland. Unfortunately, this places John's likely birth in the earlier OPR series, which are incomplete for various historical reasons of those ancient times. Thus it may be that his birth was not recorded at all, the record may have disappeared or been destroyed; or it may be amongst the OPRs not handed over for safe-keeping to the 1855-created Official - The Registrar General of Scotland. The FMP Censuses covers only people present in E&W on the appropriate Census night; and similaarly for the Scottish Censuses on SP - in both cases it did not matter their ethnic origins. The "1881 British Census " on the LDS FS site covers England & wales ONLY, no Scottish or Irish sections. You may find the Brazilian birth on FMP under Foreign births registered at the appropriate British Consulate or Embassy. Be wary of "marriage announcement" contents - it may be that John indicated that he was from Edinburgh for convenience rather than accuracy. If it is an announcement rather than an official record, it may be that the reporter assumed Edinburgh. Even on the official records, the Liverpool Minister or local Registrar would have no means of checking the accuracy, so basically had to accept whatever he was told.
