William Smart and Elizabeth Parrott applied for marriage on 2 February 1788 in Halifax Co, Va. Others shown on this bond were Jesse Spalding/Spaling and Benj Graves(?<-hard to read. (copy of Marriage Bond) In January 1825 and proven in July 1825 in Halifax Co, VA (copy of Will) Elizabeth Smart made out her will and named four daughters; Judith Clay: Judith Smart married William Clay around January 15, 1824 in Halifax Co, VA. (copy of Marriage Record). William and Judith had one son; Thomas Jefferson Clay. Judith probably died after 1840 and before 1860. William Clay, his wife and one male 10-15 years old are living in Monroe Co, Indiana at the taking of the 1840 census. In 1860 he appeared to be living in the house hold of Thomas Clay and wife Angeline. At this time William was 67 years old born in VA and listed as a Widower. He last appeared in the 1870 census as 80 years old born in Virgina and Widower. He was still in the house hold of Thomas J. Clay and Angeline. William was probably the brother of Thomas Clay Jr who married Judith's sister Susannah/Susan. Susannah Clay wife of Thomas Clay Jr. Susannah Smart married Thomas Clay. Their marriage bond shows the date November 30, 1812 and in Halifax Co, Virginia. (copy of marriage bond). Thomas Clay and his wife appear in the 1840 Monroe Co, IN census with several children. He again appears in the 1860 census as 65 years old born in VA a Widower. Also living with him were Elizabeth Clay and Amy Clay his daughters. In 1870 Thomas was still living in Monroe Co, IN and shown as head of house hold with one young woman Emma L. Clay (believed to be Amy. Elizabeth Jane Clay died about 1865 at 33 years of age. Thomas, Susan/Susannah, Elizabeth and Amy Loftin/Lofty Clay are all buried in the Methodist-Episcopal Cemetery in Richland Township, Ellettsville, Monroe Co, Indiana. Polly Smart is buried next to Susan/Susannah. Elizabeth Smart- Information Unknown Mary Smart: Because Mary was often interchangable with "Polly" I believe this is Polly Smart who is buried in the Methodist-Episcopal Cemetery in Richland Township, Ellettsville, Monroe Co, IN. Her headstone reads "Polly Smart daugh of Wm & E Smart. The stone is damaged and her date of death may be in the ground. Her death probably occured sometime between 1860 and 1870. In 1860 US Census, Monroe Co, Indiana, Polly Smart was living with a Hubbard Sharp and probably his wife Mary. Polly was shown as 72 years of age born in Virginia. No relationship was given and is still unknown. The names: Thomas Dowdy/Donly, Moses Smart, and Elisha East also appears on Elizabeth's last will and testament Notify Administrator about this message?
