1876 -- Men of Mark of Cumberland Valley, PA, page 452:
William T. Snodgrass, merchant, was born in Shippensburg, on September 17th, 1813. He was of Scotch-Irish descent. His father, William Snodgrass, was an extensive merchant in Cumberland county, and was a man of precision and sterling integrity.
At the age of thirteen he entered his father's store to be initiated into the routine of business, where he learned that systematic and prompt management of business matters which characterized him through life. At fifteen, he was left alone in Philadelphia, but, shunning evil associations, he spent his leisure time in study, and for five years it was his custom to devote three hours daily to mental culture. Starting with a capital of a few dollars, and refusing all aid from rich or poor relatives, by the power of his own industry, energy and merit, he rose to the highly creditable position which he occupied in the mercantile world. The fine building at the northwest corner of Ninth and Market Streets, Philadelphia, is a worthy monument to the ability of a man who carved out his own fortune, and educated to his business forty-nine young men. He never joined a club nor endorsed any paper outside of his business, which he made a life-time work, seeming fully determined to wear out rather than rust out.
Mr. Snodgrass was a member of the Board of Trade in the city in which he so long resided, and was a prominent and useful member of the West Arch Street Presbyterian Church.
Whilst Mr. Snodgrass was by birth, training and conviction, a Presbyterian, his religious sentiments were liberal, and he was strongly disposed to fraternize with and aid all evangelical Christians. Exacting as an employer, he placed every young man upon his own merit, but his active sympathy with all that concerned them drew them near to him and made them feel that in him they had more than a friend. To the world generally he was a pleasant, courteous and benevolent gentleman. He departed this life in the autumn of 1874, and his mortal remains now slumber in the beautiful cemetery of Laurel Hill.

pages 272-3: William T. Jamison.
When the sad news of the death of William T. S. Jamison was received, 14 Apr 1894, every citizen of the town felt a sense of personal loss. The entire Cumberland Valley lost a familiar figure in the commercial world, and those who knew him best were bereft of a firm friend and wise counselor. He was a courteous, considerate gentleman, generous and charitable to all. In his business he was aggressive and enterprising, yet strictly honest in his methods. His word was as good as his bond, and his honor was untarnished. Mr. Jamison was born in Indianapolis, IN, 3 Jul 1843, son of John and Mary Jane (Snodgrass) Jamison.
John Jamison was one of the twelve men who located on and cleared the land where now stands Indianapolis, IN, and he felled the first tree. He owned seven and one-half acres, where the Blind Asylum is now located. In 1841 he married Mary Jane Snodgrass, who was born in Chambersburg 6 Dec 1815, daughter of William T. and Jane (Morrow) Snodgrass. He died in 1843, before the birth of their only child, William T. S., and the widowed young mother returned to her father's home in Shippensburg.
William T. S. Jamison was only a few months old when his mother brought him to Shippensburg, which was his home for the rest of his life. His school days past, he at once began to learn the rudiments of mercantile business as a clerk for J. & J. B. Reddig. From his mother he inherited a natural talent for business, and in a very short time had mastered the general methods of business transactions. During the Civil war he was a clerk in the office of the provost marshal at Harrisburg, and for a short time clerked in a dry-goods store in the same city. His time had so far been spent in preparation for the career he had determined upon. His earnings had been saved, and in 1867 he opened up a dry-goods store for himself, in the old Rankin property in Shippensburg, now occupied by Coffey Bros. this was succeeded by a room fitted up in his own home, a few doors east. Business came to him rapidly, and soon he found himself cramped for room. In 1884 he purchased the Criswell property, on the south east corner of Main and Railroad streets, and erected the present handsome and commodious building, whither his stock was removed the same year. Jamison's Bazaar became a household word to people in the Cumberland Valley. Mr. Jamison was essentially a merchant. He left nothing honorable undone to increase and extend his business, and he was a liberal advertiser, always, however, advertising his wares as they really were. He never permitted his clerks to misrepresent any thing. Courtesy to patrons and honest representation were two of his fixed rules. His place in the estimation of business rivals and associates was shown in the closing of all places of business in the city during his funeral. When the time came to pay the last tribute of respect to William T. S. Jamison a large concourse of friends assemble. Rev. W. A. McCarrell, of the Presbyterian Church, assisted by other ministers of the borough, spoke words of comfort to the sorrowing widow and the many friends, and amid a wealth of flowers the mortal remains of the beloved husband, successful merchant, upright citizen and noble Christian gentleman were laid to rest in Spring Hill cemetery.
On 23 Jan 1883, by Rev. J. M. Carvell, Mr. Jamison was married to Emily J. Daley, of Shippensburg, who survives him. Rev. R. L. Jamison of the Methodist Church of Kidder, MO, a half brother, survived him for one year. In his religious belief Mr. Jamison was a consistent Presbyterian. Fraternally he was a Mason and an Odd Fellow.
Mrs. Mary Jane (Snodgrass) Jamison entered into rest at midnight, 23 Aug 1898, in the eighty-third year of her age. Thus passed another familiar figure from the busy daily life of Shippensburg. Mrs. Jamison was born in Chambersburg, 6 Dec 1815, a daughter of William T. and Jane (Morrow) Snodgrass, worthy pioneers of Scotch-Irish descent, who were married 20 Dec 1809 by Rev. Dr. John Moodey. She was but a few weeks old when her parents removed to Shippensburg, where her father conducted a mercantile business, and was prominent in the welfare and advancement of the Presbyterian Church. In 1841 she married John Jamison, of Indianapolis, IN, were they resided until Mr. Jamison's death, which occurred in 1843, when she returned to Shippensburg with her infant son, William T. S.
Mrs. Jamison was a woman of remarkable business ability, and was one of the first, if not the first, ladies to become a saleswoman, as she entered her father's store in early life, subsequently her brother's, and finally her son's. The latter became one of the leading merchants in the Cumberland Valley, and with him she remained until his death, when she retired. He pleasant, hearty welcome was sadly missed by the shoppers, and when death came thy spoke feelingly of her efforts in their behalf, of her kindly guidance and counsel, which helped to mold their lives in safer and surer ways. Her last years were made pleasant through the loving care of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Emily J. Jamison, who was most devoted to her. Her brother, Robert Snodgrass, of Philadelphia, is the only surviving member of the family.
In early life Mrs. Jamison united with the Presbyterian Church, and was always faithful in the discharge of her Christian duties. She was very charitable, her great womanly heart sympathizing with every cry of distress. Her remains rest in Spring Hill cemetery.

The brick house on the next lot in which Mrs. Mary Pomeroy now lives, was owned and in the possession of William Snodgrass, in which he carried on, for a number of years, a successful trade in Dry Goods and Groceries, but becoming dissatisfied with the retail business, and conceiving the idea of removing to Philadelphia in order to engage in the wholesale trade, he sold his property and left the place for his new field of operations, but for some cause, remained there bur a short time, when he returned to Shippensburg and resumed business in the room now occupied by Jacob Stevick as a Grocery store. In early life Mrs. Snodgrass commenced the mercantile business near the eastern end of the town, in the house lately occupied by Mrs. Mary Sanderson.

About the year 1840, a few citizens organized a company of over a hundred of the active young men of the place under the name of the "Vigilant Fire Company of Shippensburg." <Desc. of 1 Thomas Snodgrass & Mary Woods>

Note: Sophie Seldon Rogers was a professional genealogist. This collection of documents was apparently collected by her for a client. Neither the name of the author nor the name of the client is given. The bulk of the information, however, is written on stationary of the House of Representatives, Harrisburg, PA. There is much duplication of information, some of which I have left out. Also a word of explanation: An equal sign = was formerly used to indicate a marriage.

Thomas Snodgrass lived about three miles beyond Middle Springs in a farm house built about 1756. He bought the farm from Barabas Hughes and sold it to Samuel Maclay, who married Margaret Snodgrass his daughter (Aunt Peggy, as Papa called her, I went to her funeral about 1862 or 63). Samuel Maclay died there and Peggy his wife moved to town about the close of the Civil War. Peggy had children John, Thomas, Robert, Charles, Samuel, and three daughters, Mary Jane married a Ewing, Elizabeth committed suicide. She was very handsome and was engaged to a Snodgrass who lived on the White farm where Robert Snodgrass of Harrisburg was raised.

Jean Morrow Henderson had brothers and sisters, no doubt, but have no record of them. There were 4 old maids who lived out near the creek, Martha, Lizzie and a Margaret who married a Gillian from St. Thomas and Jane who married a McCune. Maggie McCune Rhodes lives at Middle Spring who is a daughter of Jane Henderson McCune but she cannot remember anything is old and sick. She has written to her children at my request two or three years ago, but she could not find any records. There are Hendersons buried at Middle Spring one a James and a Revolutionary soldier but he is her father she thinks, so would not be in direct line for us and he is only one at Middle Springs marked. Aunt Eliza Henderson & Uncle Jimmie (as we always called him) are buried there but they were both single and were your father (Robert Snodgrass') uncle and Aunt (James Henderson & Eliza Henderson).
- - - - - - - - - -
Matthew Henderson was an officer and his name is on the monument at Middle Spring that I told you about in the churchyard. Matthew and his ancestors or connections may be in Penna Archives Series 3 Vol. 6, but I do not know anything about him.
- - - - -
Aunty Jamison did not have a bible of her own she had William Snodgrass' bible and these are the only records in it. Nothing about the Hendersons except the marriage of William and Jean Morrow Henderson but we are related to the morrows and the Strains, for I remember that Aunty talked about the latter and did not like them.
