William James Spann was born January 22, 1842 near Tumbleton in Henry County, Alabama. He was the seventh child of John Edward Spann Sr. and Marcilla Odom. The Spann family came to Henry County, Alabama in 1832 from Ridge Spring, South Carolina. William James Spann served for a short time in the Confederate Army. He and his older brother Dildatha Odom Spann enlisted as privates in Company E, 25th Georgia Volunteer Infantry on August 25, 1862. Both William and Dildatha became sick with camp fever within a month. William was sent home in October 1862 and never returned to active duty. William James Spann was married twice. He was married first on November 8, 1862 in Henry County, Alabama to Miss Elizabeth Armstrong. They were the parents of the following children: 1) William Joseph Spann - born May 7, 1863 2) Mary Eliza Spann - born 1865 3) John Thomas Spann - born January 23, 1867 4) James Sidney Spann - born April 18, 1869 Elizabeth Armstrong Spann died in April 1869 following the birth of her last child. She is buried in the Spann-Roney family cemetery near Tumbleton, Henry County, Alabama. William James Spann was married second on May 17, 1869 in Henry County, Alabama to Miss Elizabeth Roney. They were the parents of the following children: 5) S.E. Spann - born May 1871 6) Sissie Spann - born 1874 7) Letitia Mattie Spann - born April 1877 8) Frances "Fannie" Spann - born 1878 9) Loudie Spann - born February 1880 10) Peter M. Spann - born October 1881 11) Alexander J. Spann - born February 1884 12) Lena B. Spann - born July 1886 William James Spann removed with his second family to the Slocomb Community in Geneva County, Alabama about 1890. He died in that place on April 4, 1902 and is buried at Wesley Methodist Church Cemetery. Elizabeth Roney Spann was living 1920 at Slocomb.
