There are for sure two William Spanns about the same age in Rutherford County up to about 1869 - William R. Spann moved to Dickson County about then.

As far as two Hartwell Spanns, Hartwell was the middle name of at least one other Spann - I believe Richard Spann born abt 1810 was Richard Hartwell Spann.
