Spann/ Span family Knobs/ Yadkin/ Iredell

I need some help please. We seem to be stuck. My GGrandfather was Thomas Span, m. to Rebecca (Dingler). The children are William, Columbus, Charles, John, Frederick (aka Melas)and Sarah. Thomas was listed as Mulatto, as were the kids. On the census, and his death record, it appears he is first listed as white, then is written over (on both documents!!)as mulatto or black. Rebecca was listed as white. After Thomas dies in 1868, all the children "pass" as white and are listed from that time on as such; (WW1 registration cards, marriages, deaths, birth's, death's; all white) Genetically speaking we are all short, jet black/ dk brown straight hair and all have the same thin long nose. We cannot locate Thomas, anywhere, prior to 1870 census. On the census Thomas is from South Carolina. The family is always listed in Knobs/ Yadkin/ Iredell counties. Any clue's out there? Thanks, Chris
