The truth is the only information set in stone about Abraham's wife is that her name was Anna. Not Mary. And it's note ven proven she was a Ruffner. For example in 1778 the will of Peter Ruffner is written. He callls Benjamin Strickler his "friend" and not his nephew. The reasoning behind Anna being a Ruffner is that when Abraham Strickler died his wife Anna refused to administer the estate so Peter Ruffner was appointed to administer. Common thought has been that Anna chose her brother to administer the estate, however if there was a dispute keeping her from administering the estate then a non-relative would have been chosen as administrator because they would have been more impartial than a relative.

The information about an older Peter Ruffner seems bogus. There is no evidence that he existed in the years near Peter, Jr.'s birth. There are much older Peter Ruffner's living in the early 1600's and a few living after 1720. The only Ruffner line to leave Switzerland in the Colonial period was that of Hans Ruffner and wife Elsbeth Thommen. The name is still common in the area around Kampfen, Groningen, Harlin and Deventer, Holland where the Ruffner families lived in exile. The name is also still common in certain parts of Switzerland but are mostly concentrated in the hills above Interlaken. Since the Stricklers were known to be in Germany and often traveling between Northern Germany and south central Germany via Amsterdam it is thought that if Abraham did marry a Ruffner it would have been a daughter of Hans Ruffner that he met on one of these trips. Research is far to sketchy to draw any concrete conclusions on the family.

As for Benjamin Strickler's wife. The identity of his wife as Maria Funk is well documented in the more recent Funk Family Histories that have been published. If they don't convience you then check into the will and estate dispersal of Jacob Funk that names his daughter Maria Strickler wife of Benjamin who live in Virginia.

There is always the outside possibility that Benjamin had a previous wife named Maria Biedler as I've found that all family lore usually has a grain of truth. However that grain of truth was that her name was Mary!
