John Parks Strickler married Sarena Lonolla McClellan, daughter of Nathaniel L. and Mary C. 'Mattie' Smith, on 15 Dec 1889 in Washington Co., AR. Sarena was born 29 Mar 1872 in Lafayette Co., MS.
John Parks was born on 15 Feb 1861 in Washington Co., AR, and was the son of Jacob Strickler and Melinda Lewis.
Jacob Strickler (who was the son of Jacob Strickler Sr. and Barbara Ellen Slaughter of Shenandoah Co VA/Sullivan Co TN) was a prospector in the Gold Rush of 1849. He went to Grand Prairie, CA and came back to Washington Co., AR, emptyhanded by 1852. He was a Private in Co B, 1 ARK Cavalry, Union Forces and was was given a disability discharge on account of epilepsy. He died in Washington Co AR on 10 Nov 1900.
Jacob's father, Jacob Sr, was the son of Samuel Strickler and Christina Burner. After his service in the War of 1812 (he served under Capt. Joseph Everett, Co. of E. TN Militia) Jacob Sr. came back home to Sullivan Co TN a different man. He had become ill in the service and apparently after he returned he was subject to epileptic fits of a nature that rendered him demented and totally disabled. His wife Barbara left him and moved to Washington Co. ARK with her children, he spent money he didn't have and had suits filed against him for it, and finally he was declared an invalid and his father Samuel (and later his brother Samuel) were his guardians. He died on 29 Apr 1852 in Sullivan Co TN.

Now a word about Melinda "Davis", the wife of Jacob the Civil War soldier......
Many records (including her son John Parks Strickler's death certificate) state that his mother's last name was Davis. However, Jacob Strickler's Civil War widow's pension files prove otherwise. Malinda states that she married a man named Andrew Davis and that he died the year before she and Jacob were married on 20 Dec 1841. She also states her maiden name was Lewis. Malinda had one daughter, Elmira Davis, with her first husband Andrew. Elmira was born around 1840.)
