Hi John.

Its been a long time (some years) since I looked at this particular idea (which I have seen propogated many times), so I won't advance any theories as to its origins, but given that historian Lyon Gardiner Tyler (Pres. John Tyler's son, author of 'The Letters and Times of the Tylers', and editor of 'Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography') gave Gov. John Tyler's parents as John Tyler and Anne Contesse (rather than Henry Tyler and Alice Strother), I don't think there's much of a case for this purported Strother antecedent for Pres. Tyler.

I think I remember running across a correction of this Tyler confusion in Mag. of Virg. Hist. and Bio., or maybe Tyler's Quarterly, but seem to have made no copies, nor taken any notes. I doubt its worth looking for though with L.G.T., G.B. Roberts, and other good authorities in agreement.
