Born in Madison County, Virginia, on July 12, 1799; son of William and Milley (Medley) Strother. Studied law and licensed to practice. Removed to Haywood County in 1829; bought land, and practiced law for fifteen years in Brownsville. Married to Margaret McConechie, a cousin. Children -- James Robert, Charles Henry, Virginia (Mrs. Nathaniel J. Longley), Eliza Bell (Mrs. John Jay Williams), and Olivia Strother. Ruling elder in Presbyterian Church; licensed to preach in 1844; ordained an evangelist in 1846; preached at Union Presbyterian Church, Brownsville, 1848-54; continued law practice until 1867. Died in Brownsville on July 26, 1867; buried in Alston-Johnston Cemetery, Madison County.
