My name is John LeRoy Sullivan. I was born in Loup City Nebraska May 6, 1942. I am new to this, so I would appreciate your help in trying to find out when and where my Sullivan ancestors were in Ireland. I am making a trip to Ireland in the next couple of weeks and anything would help. My father was Albert LeRoy Sullivan, born January 2, 1915 in Belle Plaine, Iowa. He passed away in Oakland, California in 1957. My grandfather was John Charles Sullivan, born in Chelsea, Iowa December 5, 1867. He was the son of Charles and Eliza Sullivan. I don't have any information on them other than the fact that they were in Iowa in 1867. My grandmother was Mary Zavodski, born in Bohemia. My uneducated guess is that this branch of the Sullivans came to America prior to the potato famine. Living in Mid-Iowa in 1867 just after the Civil War, was living in Indian country. You had to be a real pioneer to take a family to the unknown and start a farm or ranch. Most of the famine immigrants, I believe did not have the skills to farm or raise stock and would have been more comfortable staying in cities with other immigrants. There seems to be a large number of Sullivans that came to Iowa early. Any information would be helpful. I look forward to hearing from you. If I can say "Hello" to any of your Sullivans while I am on the Emerald Isle, let me know. Best regards, John Notify Administrator about this message?
