The following, entries in a family Bible, might be of help to you: Family Record Births "Moses Sutherland [son of Walter Sutherland], born at Lancaster[Ontario]on the 6th day of March 1803, Catherine McKay, alias Sutherland[his wife] born March 14th, 1801." Also, the children, "Walter John May 5th, 1828 Angus February 22nd, 1830 Alexander on 13th July 1832 John I. August 2nd, 1834 Humy Ann Nov 11th 1835 Margaret on the 7th April 1838 John James December 31st, 1840 Christian January 6th, 1842 Catherine Jane March 9th, 1845 Ann Sutherland 20th January 1848 Mary Ann May 6th, 1850" On another sheet it states: "Family Record Marriages" "Moses Sutherland married to Catherine McKay on the 17th day of May 1827. Walter John Sutherland married to Eliza Ann Graveley Oct 23rd, 1854. Angus Sutherland married to Mary Cadwell on the 2nd day of January 1856. Humia A. Sutherland married to Leonard Blanchard February 5th, 1865 John I[J[ Sutherland married to Ratchal Morrison March 11th, 1867" On another sheet it states: "Family Record Parents' Register Father Colonel Walter Sutherland of Lancaster of Moses Sutherland of Lancaster Mother, Anna Campbell of Montreal" Note: Walter Sutherland[born Kirkhill, Kyle of Tongue Scotland] had a younger brother Joseph Sutherland[who, from about 1797, lived at Lot 22, concession 5, Lancaster Township east of St. Raphaels] and a brother, George Sutherland who is buried in the old cemetery[tombstone] in South Lancaster. The Walter Sutherland who married Eliza Graveley would have been the son of Moses Sutherland, according to the entry in Bible. The repetition of the same first names among these 'Scotch' families was a very common occurence. Walter and his brother, Joseph[b c 1755], had been spies for the British during the American Revolution and Joseph was taken prisoner by rebels near Ticonderoga in May 1775, later being in the Albany jail until October of that year when he escaped and went to Johnson Hall. He stayed at Johnson Hall[near Albany New York] until November, then returned to Albany in disguise, as the rest of the 26th regiment[a highland resgiment] were still prisoners. He was able to find his brother, Walter Sutherland, and they, along with two others, rejoined Sir John Johnson and stayed at Johnson Hall during the winter. Walter Sutherland helped Patrick McNiff survey the 'sunken' township of Lancaster which borders on the Province of Quebec. The Sutherland family were among the first settlers within Lancaster Township, settling first at the mouth of what is now known as "Sutherland Creek". It has been told to me that Walter ventured upstream from Montreal with his family on rafts, landing at the mouth of the creek, along with the slaves who received their freedom. Joseph remained in Sorel Quebec for a few years before settling in Lancaster Township. Walter Sutherland and his brothers were born near the Kyle of Tongue[Kirkhill] in Scotland[opposite the Orkney Island, on Pentland Firth], and he and his brothers joined the 26th Regiment of Foot which came to America at the outbreak of the Revolution. Who was the father of John S. Sutherland? I think that Walter had a son named John Johnson Sutherland who drowned c 1817.
