PETERMURRAYmarriedELIZABETH SUTHERLAND
[1789-1873][1790-1865]
An entry in the 'Rolland' - Sutherland Local Militia ...Muster Roll 1813,
shows a Private Peter Murray, born circa 1789, 5'7" tall of Langwell,
Rogart. Peter would appear to be a son of Robert and Mary Murray of
Langwell but this has never been proved. Peter was dubbed 'Peter Langwell
Murray' and often called just 'Peter Langwell' which designation clung to
him throughout his life. It is known from family legend that he spent some
time in Paisley, Renfrewshire, possibly during his time with the Militia.
He returned to the family croft at Langwell. He married Elizabeth Sutherland
circa 1812 at Rogart. They had the following children born at Langwell
(OPR): ISABELLA, born 29 December 1813 m. George ROSS; JEAN, born 1815 m. James JOHNSTON; JOHANNA ,
born 3 May 1817; CHRISTIAN, born 15 July 1819 m Donald HOLMES ; JANET, born 22 March 1822 m. Donald Alexander MACDONALD
JOHANNA, born 25 March 1825 m. Donald MACKAY; GEORGE, born 2 January 1828 m. Elizabeth SUTHERLAND; DOLLINA, born 26
November 1830 m. George ROSS and JOHN, born 14 July 1833.

Peter's wife Elizabeth is described in a family book as being of goodly
height, light complexion, even temperament, pleasing personality, and as
being an excellent and capable manager of the household. Family legend
stated that she was a distant cousin to the Countess of Sutherland but this
has never been proved. The same legend tells that Peter (sometimes recorded
as Patrick) owned the land at Langwell but in fact he is shown on the 1824
records of Rogart as a tenant in Langwell along with many other tenants.
Elizabeth's sister Jean had married John Embleton and left Scotland for
Canada where he established a general store in Streetsville, Ontario, near
Tornoto. William Sutherland, a younger brother of Jean, accompanied them to
Streetsville, and from there wrote such glowing descriptions of the
advantages of farming in Ontario over the difficulties in the Highlands of
Scotland, that Peter Murray was inspired to make the trip also. He and
Elizabeth left Rogart with their children and settled on the 10th to the
11th Lines in the area known as 'Zorra'. It is thought that the family
arrived in Canada in 1835.
