John J. Thomas was born near Cayuga Lake, Cayuga County, NY in 1810. He was the son of David Thomas. He became an editor and author of horticultural literature. This portrait of him appears as the frontpiece to The Gardener's Monthly and Horticulturist, vol.XXV, 1883. There is also a biographical sketch of him on pages 378-379 of that volume.
