Arthur Herbert Thompson was born on 29 April 1870 in Maidstone, Kent, England. He is entered in the 1901 England Census (RG13/542/39/4) as Arthur Thompson, aged 30, a Fishmonger, of 115 Woolwich Road, Greenwich, London, living with his wife Louisa and his younger brother Charles, also a Fishmonger. The full name of brother Charles was in fact Alfred Charles, although he appears to have been more usually known in his lifetime as Charles Alfred. I have successfully traced both the marriage and the death details for brother Charles, but obtaining such information for Arthur Herbert Thompson himself has proved to be rather more elusive. Firstly, I seriously doubt the authenticity of the details as given in 1901 for Arthur's supposed 'wife' Louisa, as no suitable marriage for them, by whichever variation of name, has been found in the BMD indexes of the General Register Office within the relevant period 1891-1901, (and in the 1891 Census Arthur had been entered as an unmarried Boarder living in Battersea). However, I have in my possession the Death Certificate for an Arthur Herbert Thompson who died, aged 60, on 31 October 1930 in Islington Registration District, London. Although the deceased died in hospital the home address of both the deceased and of the informant is shown as 119 Old Street, St Luke's. The occupation of the deceased is entered as a Fish Fryer, and the informant at his death is named as his widow, E E Thompson. I have checked the appropriate entries in the Borough of Finsbury Register of Electors for 119 Old Street (Polling District H - City Road East Ward) and have ascertained the relevant details for the Thompson's. These are that this address was occupied at that time by a Sidney Arthur Thompson and an Ellen Elizabeth Thompson who, I must assume, were regarded as husband and wife. The Register of Electors for 1931 has the term 'Dead' against the name of Sidney Arthur Thompson - only Ellen Elizabeth Thompson is still in residence at this address. So, were Arthur Herbert Thompson and Sidney Arthur Thompson in reality one and the same person? Again, there are no suitable marriages to be found in the GRO indexes for either an Arthur Herbert Thompson or a Sidney Arthur Thompson to an Ellen Elizabeth! There are certainly no known children or extended family left to ask. It seems likely, therefore, that Arthur Herbert Thompson never did actually get married, either to a Louisa prior to 1901 or to an Ellen Elizabeth before 1930! It will be interesting to see how his entry is recorded in the 1911 Census, when released, and whether or not he had a 'wife' at that time, and at which address he was living! Which leaves me with a Death Certificate for a Thompson whom I believe to be an ancestor of mine (Great Great Uncle), but at present I cannot prove or disprove such a relationship! Does anyone have any further knowledge of these names, by any chance, please? Many thanks Peter Thompson Notify Administrator about this message?
