Estanaula is about 4 miles SW of Mercer in the SE corner of Haywood Co. There is still a landing there, just a short distance SE of where Big Black Creek runs into the Hatchie River. The Estonalie Road runs from the former ferry crossing to Denmark in Madison County and was the main route between Jackson and Memphis at that time. A CSA memorial was put up recently at the Hayes Chapel Cemetery, about a mile west of Mercer on Hwy 138. A CSA raiding party on its way to Jackson from crossing the Hatchie at Estonalie was ambushed nearby, and those killed were allowed to be buried there, but outside the cemetery fence.
