This has been my brick wall for years that I keep pounding my head against to no avail. Surely SOMEONE out there has to have ties to this man or to his relatives; I refuse to believe he hatched from an egg!
Here is what I know: Henry Fletcher ATKINSON, my g-grandfather, was married in Dec 1899 to Corinna HAMPTON, in Henderson County, TN. They are shown on the 1900 census living in Carroll County, TN, near her parents. On the 1910 census, they are found in Chickasaw County, MS (it took forever to find them, why Mississippi??). In 1920 They are back in Henderson County TN, which is where Henry died around 1926 or so.
On the 1900 census, it states Henry was born in Tennessee in Oct 1880, but his parents in Georgia. On the 1910 & 1920 census records, however, he was born in Georgia as well as his parents. Corinna was born in Tennessee.
Henry completed his WWI Draft Registration Card on Sept 12, 1918. At the time he was residing in Yuma, Carroll County, TN, his occupation being a farmer (as it was on all census records). He states his date of birth as being Oct 15, 1879.
Henry Fletcher ATKINSON is buried in Wildersville, Henderson Co, TN in Farmville Cemetery, and the dates on his stone say "1872 - 1926". Since the birth year is definitely wrong, I'm not sure the year of death is accurate.
Henry and Corinna had the following children:
Lillie ATKINSON b. 1903 d. 1937, possibly married a BRADFORD
Meggie Lora ATKINSON b. abt 1909, m William Henry ARNOLD d. ?
Henry Martin ATKINSON b. 1910, m. Juanita LEWIS, d. abt 1996
Leslie O. ATKINSON b. 1912, m. Mae JOWERS, d. 1978
James Garfield ATKINSON / ATKINS b. 1916, m. Nadine BUTLER, d. 1979
Daisy ATKINSON b. 1917, m. Waverly LINDSEY, d. 1935.
They also had an unnamed infant that died, also buried with them at Farmville Cemetery.
All of Henry's children seemed to have stuck close to home, residing in and around Henderson and Carroll counties, TN. My grandfather, James Garfield, changed his name sometime after Henry's death to ATKINS, for reasons I cannot find. On the 1930 census, Corinna had remarried, and only Daisy was left at home - all the other siblings had left home, even Garfield, who was only 14, and his last name was listed as ATKINS at that time.
My father, who was Garfield's son, would not talk about his family, and had even cut off ties to them all after his parents died. Ours does not seem to have been a very warm and close family, and I am determined to find out why. I don't think I can do so unless I can trace Henry back and try to learn more about where he came from, and possibly find descendents that are related to him. My father died in 2001, and to my knowledge, there are only 2 surviving ATKINS / ATKINSONS from our line - myself, and my cousin, who is not much interested in her roots. It appears that Henry's descendents have almost completely died out, and I have no family left.
The only other possibly clue I have is that I have heard that Henry's "family" all went out west, to Kansas and Oklahoma, and some even operated a funeral home out there for a while (??). I am looking at the theory that Henry's family from Georgia was headed out west around the 1880's / 1890's, and he somehow got left behind in Tennessee.
I am sorry this has ended up being so long, but I am so close to giving up hope in ever finding Henry's parents and family. If anyone knows of an ATKINSON family (or ADKINSON, ATKINS, ADKINS, ATKISSON, etc., as apparently they felt free to change their names on their own accord) - if anyone knows of a family from Georgia with a son named Henry that is somehow lost from the rest of the family, please email me soon at "archiesmom@bellsouth.net".
