Am dabbling on the Sumner/Sumler line for a friend. Can anyone get past Nicholas Sumner and wife, Margaret F, that appear on the 1840 census in Haywood Co, TN? And later are on the 1850 Census in Madison Co., TN and have daughters, Martha F., Nancy and a son, James. Not sure what happened to other daughter. Both, he and wife are listed as born in N.C. They appear to be neighbors or may have traveled with the M.B. Sherman family. Another neighbor is Zelphia Dickinson, age 44, and from NC. her children are Cenna or Benna, Sarah E., and Mary M. I think this Zelphia may be a sister of Nicholas and she married a Dickinson. The Zelphia (and many spelling variations of that name) appear repeatedly in the Sumner/Sumler family. On 1860 census is Nicholas Sumner and wife, Margaret F, with children, FAnnie, age 20, Zelphia, age 19, Nancy, age 18, Jennie, age 15, Shelby, age 12 and William, age 9. This last child, William, is the one I'm focusing on. His birthdate fits in perfectly with the William S. Sumler, born Dec 2, 1850 and died Dec 22, 1923 and is buried in the Jack's Creek Cemetery. Next to his wife, Martha J. Sumler. I think this is William Sherman Sumler (and the middle name would come from the Sherman family they were neighbors of) and that this Nicholas Sumner is his father. There is always the question mark on things. On the genealogy miscellany of Henderson Co., Tn..is the death certificate on William S. as given by his son, Willie. He says that William S. Sumler's father is W.L. Sumler of N.C. So, the usual question. Could the L. be misread and could it be an N. for Nicholas? Where are Nicholas and his wife, Margaret buried? Also, on the 1880 census of Dist 11, Henderson Co., TN is Wm Sumler, wife Martha J. and children, Lilly D., Shelby, Montgomery, Gilpia (Zilphia) that is sister of Wm, and William N. Sumler that is age 16. But, he is listed as something other than a direct relationship...which leads me to think he is a nephew maybe. I think the N would be for Nicholas. There was a change in the name..from Sumner to Sumler. I know starting with William S. (one born in 1850), that he is listed as Wm Sumlar on the 1880 census. Does anyone know why the change? I am sure this may be rambling, but just throwing it out to see if anyone else researching the Sumner/Sumler line and how far back can you go? Also, it was hard to find the Sumler name. Even Richard Sumler, is listed on the 1920 census as Russell Samle/Samler. I should say, the way it was read. I found many Sumners/Sumlers just by typing in the known neighbors and looking till I found the Sumler family. judy malone Notify Administrator about this message?
