Samuel Franklin died between June 1857 to probably 1858, he is not found on the mortality schedule of 1859. It is understood from info passed down through the ages that he died of some type of wound infection, possibly from a knife blade or gunshot. His youngest son was born March 1858. His widow, Olivia Jane Franklin, is residing in Henderson Co. on the 1860 census as a tennant farmer. In researching all the info online regarding Henderson Co., I find that this was a county divided on the slave issue. One story passed down says that he was showing a slave how to cut hemp in the field when he got cut(probably cut himself) and the wound got infected. Another inkling stated that he may have been helping slaves escape to the north and was apprehended. He may have died in an adjoining county. Sometimes faint tales linger in counties of bygone incidents that are not recorded in history. I am hoping that someone may have heard of something and could relate the info to me. This individual would be my great-great-grandfather, and he may have been of Indian descent.
