My Grandfahter always claimed that his maternal grandmother MARY [POLLY] BILBREY was full blooded Cherokee.
Mary was the daughter of BENTON AND PASHA BILBREY.The story is that Benton adopted two Native American girls,Mary[Polly] born ca. 1816 and her sister Nancy[Sally] born ca. 1820.
Does anyone have any information on this family? If so,is there proof that this claim is true?
Mary [Polly] Bilbrey later married William Matheny and had a daughter, Martha LeeAnn Matheny who married Joseph Phillips in Overton County in 1873.
