The 8th National Schwanger Family Reunion (for Swanners and Swangers) will be held in Chattanooga, Tennessee 26-27 June 2004 at the St. Stephen’s Catholic Church Annex, 7111 Lee Highway, Chattanooga. The emphasis at this reunion will be on the Southern lines of the family.
In October 1747 Jacob and Maria Schwanger immigrated from Helleringen, Lorraine, Germany (now in France) to Philadelphia in the American colony of Pennsylvania. They soon moved west to Berks County, PA where they purchased land and had seven sons. This family established the line from which over the next 250 years nearly all Swangers and Swongers and many of the Swanners in America descended.
Sometime before 1796 one of Jacob’s and Maria’s grandsons, John Jacob Swanger left Pennsylvania and made the long trip down the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to the newly created Carter County in the new State of Tennessee. In this wilderness on the edge of the frontier, John Jacob Swanger married Violet Boring of Carter County and together they founded the “Smokey Mountain” line of Swangers and Swanners. Over the next 200 years this line has spread throughout Tennessee, North Carolina, the other southern states and beyond. A large group of these Swanger and Swanner descendants are living today throughout the Chattanooga and Sequatchie County area.
Sometime before 1830 one of John Jacob’s and Violet’s sons, John Swanger married Peggy Stevens of Tennessee and they “crossed over the mountain” into western North Carolina in what is now Haywood County, where Cold Mountain is located. In 2004 the Pulitzer Prize winning novel “Cold Mountain” was made into a movie and featured a fictional Swanger family that is closely based on John’s and Peggy’s real life drama.
So, come join us in Chattanooga for the 8th Annual Schwanger Family Reunion and discover your southern Swanger and Swanner roots going back to the 1600’s in Europe through two presentations by our family historian, Dr. Alvin Swonger: “The Swangers and Swanners of Early Tennessee” and “The Real Story Behind ‘Cold Mountain.”

9:00-10:00AM Welcome and introduction of Association officers and founders. Socializing hour with introductions of each family group (bring any information you may wish to share on your ancestors.)
10:15-11:45AM Presentation by Dr. Al Swonger: “Swangers and Swanners in Early Tennessee to Present Day.”
Noon-1:30PM Catered lunch at the Church Annex by the Golden Corral Restaurant.
1:30-2:30PM Presentation by Dr. Al Swonger: “The Real Story Behind Cold Mountain.”
2:45-3:30PM Schwanger Association Business Meeting with election of Officers for 2004-2006. Selection of 2005 and 2006 Reunion sites.
