Commercial Appeal Memphis, TN 1-24-1981 W.C. BATEMAN, FORMER JUDGE, DIES AT AGE 72 William C. Bateman, 72, a former City Court judge, a city claims agent, and a long-time assistant city attorney, died yesterday at Baptist Hospital. Mr. Bateman graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Law. He was the city claims agent in 1936, and in 1938 he became City Court judge. He entered World War II as an Army captain and was discharged as a lieutenant colonel. After the war, he was an assistant city attorney for 19 years. He was in private law practice until he became ill in December. Mr. Bateman was a deacon of First Baptist Church, a member of Al Chymia and the Scottish Rite Masonic orders, and a member of the Military Order of the World Wars. He was also a trustee of Union University in Jackson. Tenn. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with burial in Memorial Park. Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel has charge. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Marjorie Meeker Bateman; two sons, William C. Bateman, Jr., who is an assistant city attorney, and Robert J. Bateman of Oxford, Miss.; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Lawrie of Heber Springs, Ark. and Mrs. Marjorie B. Kersh of Memphis; a brother, Robert Johnston Bateman of Dallas, and nine grandchildren. The family request that any memorials be sent to Union University or First Baptist Church. Notify Administrator about this message?
