Hello, Trying to find the burial place of my g-g-g grandfather. He died in Memphis in December of 1869, from complications of smallpox he contracted during the Civil War. I believe the family was just passing through Memphis, on their way to join a wagon train to Texas, when he became ill and died. He was a Southerner who fought for the Union, but I can find no record of his burial in the National Cemetery, or in Elmwood. I have also found no death record or obituary; the latter, I assume, is because he was merely visiting Memphis when he died. I do not know if he died in a hospital, but do know he had paid many visits to "the hospital at Memphis" during the war. The family was very poor, and it is quite possible there was no money to purchase a headstone. So, I am looking for guidance as to possiple gravesites for a destitute Union veteran who died in Memphis in 1869. Any and all suggestions much appreciated! His name is: John Lindsey (Lindza, Linsey) born 1834 Lauderdale County, AL died 1869 Memphis, TN Sgt in the First Alabama Calvary (Union) Wife: Margaret (Ingram) Lindsey Notify Administrator about this message?
