The 1850 Stewart Co., TN Census shows a John Jones, aged 61 from NC, married to Sarah, aged 60, also born in NC. This John Jones had 500 acres taxable. He was the father of James A. Jones. Censuses prior to 1850 show limited information, but they do indicate the names of head of households and approximate ages. The 1830 and 1840 Censuses show only one John Jones with data consistent with the John Jones of the 1850 Census. The 1820 Census has three John Joneses, one of which may be my John Jones. One John Jones died in about 1828. A study of tax returns for the years 1827, 1830, 1835, 1836, and 1837 shows that a John N. S. Jones held about 500 acres on Dyers Creek. I believe that this John Jones is the same Jones as the father of James A. Jones above. From the 1830 return, it is possible that his initials were H. S. There was another John Jones who held up to about 1000 acres on 'the south side of the Cumberland River,' and he may have been the John Jones who died in 1828. I still need to know what the initials N. S. represent. A search of 'John N. S. Jones' on the web returned a contemporary of my John Jones - John Nelson Spotswood Jones. From the children listed in the census records, it would seem that John Jones married about 1809-1810. However, his wife at that time may not have been Sarah. Would anyone care to comment on my resarch?
