Geoff, I am researching my family tree and discovered that one of my ancestors was a schooner captain on the Great Lakes, specifically Lake Ontario, and that he sailed out of Carthage, NY, (now Rochester) for the John T.Trowbridge Company. I checked the archives at the Rochester library and found that John T. had a brother Elias, who was involved in the company. I have been able to trace the ancestry of John T, but I am more interested in locating a descendant who might have a history of the shipping company. The company operated out of Oswego, NY, as well as Rochester. Would your records list any living descendants of John T. or Elias? Or, would you know of any resources where I might find material on the company? The Rochester archives had next to nothing. I have not checked Oswego. My ancestor's name was Elisha Read Wheeler, AKA Reed Wheeler and he married Caroline Rogers, daughter of Ezra Rogers and sister to Hosea, Diodate and Ezra Jr. The sons operated a shipbuilding company in Carthage. Caroline(Rogers) Wheeler died young (1939, age 29) as the result of complications in childbirth. Frederick Hayes Trowbridge, (Rosewell, Newman, Daniel,) named a daughter, Caroline Wheeler Trowbridge, b. 1841. There must have been a close relationship between Elisha and the Trowbridges for Frederick to name his daughter after Elisha's deceased wife. I have not been able to determine where Frederick was living in 1841 when his daughter was born. My hope is that if I can find out something about the company, I may be able to fit some pieces of the puzzle together. Thanks for your time. Bob Wheeler Notify Administrator about this message?
