Dear Trowbridge Family Members, I am a historian/archaeologist with the Wisconsin Historical Society and I am working on a research project focusing on John Todd Trowbridge, born in New Haven, Connecticut on October 23, 1780 to John Trowbridge Sr. and Thankful Doolittle Trowbridge. His biography is fairly well known -- a merchant sea captain captured by the British during the War of 1812, imprisoned at Dartmoor Prison. On his return to the U.S. he relocated to Oswego, NY, and operated a Great Lakes shipping concern. In 1836, he moved from Upstate NY to a rural part of the Wisconsin Territory (which is where our reserch project begins). Several years ago, the site of the Trowbridge homestead in Dover Township (near Racine, WI) was the subject of an archaeological study. A local landmark during the first half of the 19th century, Captain Trowbridge's Place (as the it was known during the period) was a stop-over point for travelers in southern WI and farmers bringin their crops to market in Racine. Both John and Mary died in WI (in 1858 and 1866 respectively), and as most of you are probably aware, they, along with several other members of their immediate family, are buried in a small cemetery in Dover Township, WI. At the homsestead site, archaeologists relocated the original cellar of the Torwbridge cabin, along with a number of other subteranean features associated with the homestead. A wide range of broken ceramics, glass bottles, architectural material, and other small personal items were found on the site as well. In order to better interpret these objects and the lives of the Trowbridge family during their time in Wiscosnin, we are seeking any personal or family documents which may relate to John T. and Mary Trowbridge or their two youngest sons, Henry and Stewart. I have been unable to locate material in either WI or NY, and I would love to correspond with any Trowbridge descendants who know of such documents or other family stories of the Trowbridge's arrival in WI. I would also be happy to share information on our excavations at the homestead site. Many thanks for you help in this endeavor, Paul Reckner Historial Archaeologist Wisconsin Historial Society Museum Archaeology Program E-mail: cluny@igc.org Wiscosnin Notify Administrator about this message?
