The following obituary for Mrs. Elizabeth Clarke, widow of Capt. Sterling Turner who was killed in the Battle of Clouds Creek in SC in November 1781 appeared in the Augusta (Georgia) Chronicle.
Issue October 20, 1827
Communicated. Died. In this place on the 14th inst. Mrs. Elizabeth Clarke of SC in the 70th year of her age. Mrs. C. was born in Chatham Co., GA and removed to SC previous to the war of the Revolution. During the struggle, her husband, Capt. Turner an active whig officer was inhumanly butchered in cold blood, with the Butlers, Richardsons and others; and herself left without protection to plunder and depredations, at that time too often the fate of the defenceless. Her fortitude of character and practical endurance of suffering, amid these trying scenes were not without their moral influence.
With habits retiring and domestic she succeeded in raising and educating a family of orphan children by a life of unwearied exertion, economy and self-denial; and her maternal solicitude and devoition in their interest ceased only with her life. Long will they cherish the memory of one thus endeared to them by a whole life of active kindness, while their pain at the separation is mitigated by a well founded assurance that the consolation of religion smoothed the pillow of death and that she is now in the full fruition of a happy immortality.
