My Grandfather James Edward Turner was born 15 May 1887 in New Decatur, Alabama, & d. 17 Nov 1932 in Water Valley Township, Randolph County, Arkansas.

I am looking for the parents of James Edward Turner and/or siblings.

I know that both his parents were born in Alabama, by Census records. His father being married twice and collectively 13 children. I do not know his parents first names nor any of his siblings.

It is said that he was "part Indian". Looking at a 1880 map of Alabama, New Decatur, Alabama was close to the Creek Indian Territory.

Family lore states that his mother passed away and his father remarried. James was "farmed out" to a school teacher in Blythesville, Arkansas at an early age to work during the day. He stayed with the school teacher at night, he was "schooled by the fire light" and that is how he got his education. So I'm thinking that his father had to live somewhere close to Blythesville, Arkansas, possibly in Dyer, Tennessee? Since my Grandfather James met & married my Grandmother in Dyer, Tennessee when he was 21.

Now, what I do know for certain:

1908 he married Sallie May Sheppard in Dyer County, Tennessee. It is said that they had 10 children. One died shortly after birth and we know nothing about the children that died nor do we exactly know where the children where in the lineup of children. They had 7 children that lived to adulthood. My dad was the last of those 7 children, born in 1931, with the first name of LN. He later went by the first name of "Buck".

WWI Draft registration states that James Edward Turner was born 15 May 1887 in New Decatur, Alabama. On 5 Jun 1917 living in Blytheville, Mississippi County, Arkansas. He was of medium height, stout build, brown hair, grey eyes & not bald. He worked for Chicago Mill & Lumber Co in Blythesville, Arkansas as a Foreman 18, was married with 3 babies and attended the Pentecostal Church of God.

1920 Federal Census shows him living in Blytheville Ward 3, Mississippi County, Arkansas. Household containing Sallie (wife), & children Madgie, Edna, Cecil & Lola.

1930 Federal Census shows him living in Half Moon Lake, Mississippi County, Arkansas. Household containing Sallie (wife), & children Madgie, Edna, Cecil, Lola, John & Mary.

I have not found him in any other Census'.

My father, Buck Turner born in Blythesville, Arkansas was 15 months old when his father James passed away.

All of the children from the marriage between James & Sallie have now passed away, except for the oldest child, she is now 96 years old.

I do know that either before or shortly after my Grandfather's death (1932), His father came and visited the family in or around Blythesville, Arkansas. So he had to live close enough to travel by a horse or by a horse drawn wagon.

I also know that my Grandfather was a Farmer & also helped build the High School in Blythesville, Arkansas about 1923.

If you know of any Turner families with 2 marriages & 13 children in Alabama to Tennessee to Arkansas or states in between (Mississippi) the above mentioned states & could have had a son/sibling born in 1887 named James Edward, Please email me.

Thank you,
Mari Turner Hanner
