My guess is that with his job more than likely his children were born overseas.

I did find mention of one. No name.

Jun 19 1856 - At Monte Video, the lady of Edward Thornton, esq. Her Britanic Majesty's Charge d'Affaires and Consul General at Monte Video, a son.

I will check again and see what else I can find.
