Just returned from a 2 week research trip to Madison County. Although I didn't find what I was looking for I met some wonderful people there. And I have to say it is one of the most beautiful areas I have ever visited.
What I was trying to determine is who were the parents of my James Alexanders and where is he buried?
James Alexander lived and died in Madison County in the 1700s. He was married to Elizabeth ???? He had two sons; George & William, and 4 daughters; Mary, Elizbeth, Lucy & Mildred.
James wrote his will in 1795(witnessed by May Burton & Leroy Canaday), it was proved in 1803.
We have pretty much determined that his property which was sold after his death was in Madison County south of Shelby Road, North of the Rapidan River and East of Elk Run. Today Route 29 probably runs through what was his land.
We know that the Alexanders were members of the Rapidan Baptist Church at Wolftown as were many of the families they married into and their friends & neighbors (Rucker, Collins, Crawford, Canaday, White, Ehart, Gibbs, Herndon, Burton).
I searched all the church and town cemeteries in the area but did not locate a grave for James. Most likey he was buried in a family cemetery on his land or a family cemetery of a friend or in-law.
One family cemetery that I was very interested in finding was that of May Burton, James' dear friend (his words when he made May Burton executor of his will in 1795). I believe that the graveyard may be located on private property (possiible on land that is now the LAMB dairy) near the intersection of Route 29 and Fredricksburg Road. That area was once called Burtonville.
If anyone has any information about private/family cemeteries in this area, or knows the LAMB family, I would appreciate hearing from you.
