FENTON's in Eastern VA

I am working on my Fenton family tree in Virginia. I have hit a block with John and Elizabeth Fenton who showed up in records in James City County, VA, in 1787. Any clues would be helpful.

"John FENTON first appears in James City County in the Personal Estate Tax Book for 1787, a man over 21, taxed for 7 slaves, 4 horses and 4 cattle. He was born perhaps 1750-1760, and came to the county with more resources than most households of the time. In 1788, by the Real Estate Books, he bought a 175 acre farm from Cole DIGGES. Later records place this land on Yarmouth Creek, a branch of the Chickahominy River west of the city of Williamsburg."

I am finding a number of mentions of Fenton's in York County in the 1600's and 1700's, what is now King & Queen Co., and most recently in Richmond Co.

Unable to make any connections to these earlier Fentons so far.

Tom
