I had not checked the Middlesex County Board for several months. I went through a few messages just to refresh my memory (or lack of one!) for Christ Church Parish. I noticed the book you are using was published by Clearfield Company in 1990. The copy that I have access to at my local library was published by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Virginia. It was printed by the Southern Historical Press, Inc. It appears that it was first published in 1897, then in 1964, and revised in 1988. The actual title is The Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia from 1653 - 1812. The newest edition includes an "Errata Section" to address errors in the early editions when compared to the original register. Corrections were shown using the letters "mss". Some of the examples I saw are as follows: Hughs, Robena mss - Rebecca Toseley, Eliza mss - Boseley One of the families I am descended from is a real "opportunity". I have chosen to use ' Alding' just for consistency. The register also shows 'Alldin', 'Alden', and 'Aldin'. From what I understand, back then they really weren't too particular about how the name was spelled. I see the following birth entries: Jane Alldin, daughter of Robert & Ellianor Alldin, born August 21, 1681 Katherine Aldin, daughter of Robert & Ellianor Aldin, born May 24, 1685 Then under marriages I see an entry for Catherine Alden who was married on November 19, 1704. This would be about right for "Katherine Aldin" born in 1685. I also read about the date issue in your posting of April 23, 2004. I had remembered reading something about that some time ago but did some research online this morning just to understand it better. I was happier when I didn't know as much. I checked the copy of the Register that I was looking at and noticed under sections identified as " Christenings 1682 & C; Christenings 1683 & 1684; Weddings or Marriages 1687; that some of the entries would have the year showing as follows: John Alldin, son of Robert & Ellianor Alldin born March 1682/3; Baptized April 8, 1683. In other parts of the book, as you mentioned in your posting, the dates do not look as though they are correctly entered. The article I read this morning said that there should be a statement in the preface of any publication stating whether the old or new style of dates was used. That information wasn't there. I believe the 1964 edition of this book might be the source of the database available on Ancestry.com. I looked up Rebecca Hughs on the database and the information that pulled up listed her as "Robena Hughs". I am not even sure if you are still working on the database, however, if there is anything I can look up for you, let me know. Barbara Notify Administrator about this message?
